The Wireless Telecommunications Bureau is committed to advancing the goals of the Federal Communications Commission. As part of this commitment, the Bureau seeks to fulfill its mission by implementing innovative ideas to:

In partnership with individuals, public and private organizations, and other government agencies, the Bureau seeks to improve the wireless landscape by fostering programs and providing access to information for all of its customers. Current outreach initiatives are:

Signal Boosters

Signal boosters are devices that hold great potential to improve wireless coverage to areas with poor signal levels. For example, signal boosters can be placed in a home or car to provide increased signal strength for cell phones. When these devices are properly installed, they can help consumers, wireless service providers, and public safety first responders by extending reliable service to areas that would otherwise have weak signals such as tunnels, subways, inside buildings and in rural and underserved areas.

Broadband Opportunities for Rural America

The Broadband Opportunities for Rural America is an online resource for those in rural America looking to bring the benefits of broadband services to their communities. The website makes available the expertise and resources of the FCC and the USDA in a single, easily-accessible location and a user-friendly format. It provides information on the different broadband technologies that can be used to bring broadband to rural America, how to access spectrum necessary for delivery of wireless broadband services, the broadband funding opportunities provided by the USDA and FCC, and instructions on how to locate companies already licensed to provide wireless services in or near specific rural communities, as well as helpful links to other FCC, USDA, and private resources related to encouraging broadband opportunities in rural America.

Rural Broadband Educational Workshops

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will conduct four educational workshops focused on rural broadband during 2008. The workshops will provide an opportunity for communities and organizations in rural America seeking to bring the benefits of broadband to their communities to learn about the resources, programs, and policies of the FCC and USDA.

Joint Federal Rural Wireless Outreach Initiative

The Joint Federal Rural Wireless Outreach Initiative is a partnership between the FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and the USDA's Rural Utilities Service to coordinate activities and essential information on programs, financial and other assistance regarding telecommunications opportunities for rural communities. The objective of this initiative is to encourage greater access and deployment of wireless services to enhance economic development throughout rural America.
