Proceedings and Initiatives
Broadband Radio Service and Educational
In April 2003, the Commission by a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and Memorandum Opinion and Order, initiated an examination of its rules and policies governing the licensing of the Instructional Television Fixed Service (ITFS), the Multipoint Distribution Service (MDS), and the Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS)(collectively, the Services) in the 2500-2690 MHz band. In this proceeding the Commission seeks to promote competition, innovation and investment in wireless bandband services, and to promote educational services. Through this proceeding the Commission intends to foster the provision of innovative and traditional service offerings to consumers as well as educational, medical and other institutions, to simplify the licensing process, and to delete obsolete rules and unnecessary regulatory burdens.
